Oxalic acid excretion after methoxyflurane and halothane anaesthesia.

چکیده
METttOXYFLURANE IS A general anaesthetic that has been implicated in the production of postoperative renal dysfunction. 1-6 The precise mechanism is unknown, but the finding of many oxalate crystals in the renal tubules, 5,6 and large amounts of oxalic acid in the urine of patients who develop renal failure after methoxyflurane anaesthesia s has suggested the possibility that oxalic acid may be partly responsible. The present study was undertaken to measure the excretion of oxalic acid and alterations in renal function that occur after methoxyfurane and halothane anaesthesia.

متن کاملThe effect of phenobarbitone on the metabolism of methoxyflurane to oxalic acid in the rat.
The effect of phenobarbitone on the metabolism of methoxyflurane in the rat was investigated. The conversion of methoxyflurane to oxalic acid was confirmed. Pretreatment with phenobarbitone resulted in a further increase in oxalic acid output indicating an acceleration of the biotransformation of methoxyflurane. If the nephrotoxicity of methoxyflurane is secondary to the products of its metabol...
متن کاملMethoxyflurane and renal function.
The results of a prospective study comparing renal function after anaesthesia using methoxyflurane, halothane or phenoperidine indicate that the use of methoxyflurane is associated with a significant rise in serum uric acid, probably caused by transient distal tubular dysfunction. Reasons are presented to suggest that the rise in serum uric acid is related to urinary fluoride derived from the b...
متن کاملRespiratory and Metabolic Changes during Methoxyflurane and Halothane Anaesthesia.
Respiratory and metabolic changes were studied in twenty normal children during inhalation of 1.5 per cent methoxyflurane or halothane. Both agents caused a significant reduction in pH, and this acidosis was entirely due to a raised Pco2. It was calculated that after 30 minutes anaesthesia the approximate arterial tension of methoxyflurane was 0.3 per cent and that of halothane 0.8 per cent. Si...
متن کاملChanges in urine osmolality and urine fluoride concentrations following methoxyflurane anaesthesia.
A study of 41 patients receiving methoxyflurane and 8 patients receiving halothane showed that on the first day after exposure to methoxyflurane there was a significant correlation between the reduction of urine osmolality and the dose of methoxyflurane. On the first and second days after exposure to methoxyflurane the patients who received a relatively large dose had significantly lower urine ...
